Middle Schools in Ontario-Montclair

Six middle schools in Ontario-Montclair serve grades 7–8, with Ray Wiltsey Middle also serving grade 6. Across the six schools, 2025–26 average proficiency was 47% in English language arts (ELA), 32% in math and 26% in science, compared with state rates of 49%, 38% and 36%. The biggest shared concern is science: the area average was 10 percentage points below the state, and no school exceeded the state rate.

Serrano Middle stands out in ELA and math, leading the schools at 55% and 43%—9 and 13 points above the other five schools’ averages, respectively. Serrano also led in both subjects in grades 7 and 8. Oaks Middle was the science leader at 35%, just below the state’s 36% and 12 points above the other schools’ average. At the other end, Vina Danks Middle had the lowest ELA and math results, 39% and 22%, while De Anza Middle had the lowest science result, 21%. SchoolDigger ranks Serrano highest among these schools, at the 65th percentile, and Vina Danks lowest, at the 34th percentile.

Recent results show improvement in ELA and science on average, but little change in math: from 2024–25 to 2025–26, the group averages rose 2 points in ELA and 4 in science, while math was essentially flat as the state’s math rate rose. Ray Wiltsey had the largest ELA and math gains, up 12 and 8 points; Vina Danks had the largest science gain, up 13 points. SchoolDigger’s three-year ranking rose 15 percentile points for Ray Wiltsey and 10 for Vina Danks, while Serrano’s fell 6 even as it remained the current ELA and math leader. All six schools reported free/reduced lunch eligible rates for 2024–25, ranging from 86% to 95%; those rates do not align neatly with achievement—for example, Serrano and Vina Danks had similar rates but very different ELA and math results. Ray Wiltsey serves a broader grade span than the other schools, so its all-grades results are not a perfectly like-for-like comparison.
