Summary:

The 15 schools in Alum Rock Union Elementary include 12 elementary schools and three middle schools, serving kindergarten through grade 8; one elementary school serves K–8. In 2025–2026, the schools’ average proficiency was 30% in ELA, 23% in math and 22% in science, compared with state averages of 49%, 38% and 36%. The most important finding is that, despite a few standouts, the average school in the area remains well below the state in all three subjects.

Adelante Dual Language Academy led in ELA at 47% and science at 38%; its ELA result was 2 points below the state, while its science result was 2 points above. Ben Painter Elementary led in math at 42%, 4 points above the state, and placed second in ELA at 45%. The lowest scores were at Thomas P. Ryan Elementary—17% in ELA and 14% in math—and O. S. Hubbard Elementary, at 11% in science. Ryan’s ELA and math scores were respectively 14 and 11 points below the other schools’ averages; Hubbard’s science score was 11 points below the other schools’ average. Adelante serves K–8, so its all-grades results are not a direct grade-span match for K–5 schools.

Between 2024–2025 and 2025–2026, average science proficiency rose 5 points, from 17% to 22%, and the gap with the state narrowed by about 2 points. Math edged up by about 1 point while ELA was nearly unchanged; both fell slightly farther behind the state. Individual results varied: Ben Painter’s ELA rose 12 points, while Millard McCollam Elementary declined in all three subjects. SchoolDigger gives Ben Painter 3 stars and a 57th-percentile ranking. Ben Painter and McCollam had similar 2024–2025 free/reduced lunch eligible shares—52% and 54%—and student–teacher ratios of 21.2 and 18.5, respectively; these are context, not explanations for their different scores.
