Summary

Lyndale Elementary is a 275-student K–5 school in San Jose’s Alum Rock Union Elementary School District. The main concern is that 2025–26 proficiency was low in every tested subject: 20% in English Language Arts (ELA), 16% in math and 13% in science, with results generally near the bottom among comparable nearby schools.

Math is the school’s strongest subject relative to state and district results, though it remains behind both: Lyndale was 23 percentage points below the state and 6 below the district in math, compared with gaps of 29 and 10 in ELA, and 23 and 9 in science. Among four same-district K–5 peers, average proficiency was 28% in ELA, 23% in math and 21% in science—8, 7 and 8 points higher than Lyndale, respectively. Lyndale ranked second-lowest among those peers in ELA and math, and lowest in science. Fifth-grade math is a particular concern: 7% of students were proficient, compared with 21% in third grade and 19% in fourth. Fourth-grade ELA was a relative bright spot at 26%, the school’s strongest grade-level ELA result.

Over four years, ELA was essentially unchanged, at 20% in 2022–23 and 20% in 2025–26; math fell from 19% to 16%, and science from 16% to 13%. The latest year brought gains in math and science, but ELA fell. Chronic absenteeism improved from 33% in 2023–24 to 20% in 2025–26, but remained above the district and state rates by 3 and 2 points. In 2024–25, 83% of students were free/reduced lunch eligible, the third-highest share among 11 nearby schools with the same measure and year. The student-teacher ratio was 21.1, close to the nearby median of 21.3.
