Summary

Lipscomb Elementary School is a small PK-5 school in Lipscomb, AL, serving 221 students within the Jefferson County school district, where a large majority of families qualify for free or reduced lunch.

This school has become a standout success story in the area, especially given its resources. Over the past several years, Lipscomb has climbed dramatically in statewide rankings, and it currently outperforms many nearby schools with similar student populations. For example, 3rd-grade math proficiency at Lipscomb (56%) is nearly triple that of Hueytown Intermediate School (20%) and more than six times higher than Charles F Hard Elementary School (8%). The school also shows exceptional results with African American students, ranking in the 79th percentile statewide for that group, and it has a strong track record of supporting English Language Learners. Attendance is another major strength—only 9.3% of students are chronically absent, compared to 16.9% across the district, suggesting a welcoming and engaging school culture.

There are a couple of areas parents may want to watch. While 3rd-grade math scores are excellent, proficiency drops significantly by 5th grade, which could point to a need for more upper-grade support. Interestingly, English scores show the opposite trend, with 5th graders performing much better than 3rd graders. The most recent year also saw a slight dip in overall rankings after two very strong years, though the school remains well above its position from just a few years ago. Compared to nearby options like Jonesboro Elementary School and Brighton School, Lipscomb is clearly a leader in the area, making it a compelling choice for families seeking a school that delivers strong results despite challenges.

Open Quote Each year we are making progress regardless of the limitations.
The staff does whatever is necessary to help all kids and even parents to learn and be successful. We teach the whole child and push them to improve. We are working hard to close learning gaps. Close Quote

Open Quote Although this school does not rate high in test scores, the personnel at the school work over and beyond to help students, parents, and families. They truly love their kids and provide before, during, and after school support to students in reading and math.
Unfortunately, lots of kids from outside the community has overwhelmed it within the last four years and has caused a culture and climate shift to the school. Close Quote
