Summary

Hueytown Intermediate School in Hueytown, AL, serves 527 students in Kindergarten through 5th grade within the Jefferson County school district, where a majority of families (about 68%) qualify for free or reduced lunch.

The school's biggest strength is attendance: its chronic absenteeism rate is just 9.2%, far better than the district (16.9%) and state (12.0%) averages. However, academic performance tells a different story. Math proficiency is a major concern—only 20% of 3rd graders, 14% of 4th graders, and 21% of 5th graders are proficient, compared to state averages of 45%, 42%, and 39%. English scores are better but still lag, especially in 4th grade where only 36% are proficient versus 60% statewide. There's also a noticeable "4th-grade slump" at this school, with scores dropping sharply from 3rd to 4th grade. The school currently ranks in the 18th percentile statewide, earning a 1-star rating, and has been on a downward trend since its peak in 2015-2016.

When compared to nearby schools, the picture is mixed. Hueytown Intermediate outperforms Charles F Hard Elementary School, Glen Oaks Intermediate School, and Westhills Elementary School, which all rank in the bottom 5-6% of the state. However, Lipscomb Elementary School, just 4 miles away in the same district, has shown remarkable improvement and now posts much higher proficiency rates in both math and English. This suggests the challenges at Hueytown Intermediate aren't insurmountable. The school does show a relative strength with English Language Learners, who ranked in the 63rd percentile in 2024-2025, though performance for low-income students has declined significantly. Given the excellent attendance but weak academics, the issues appear to lie in instructional quality and support systems rather than students missing school.
