Summary

Evergreen Elementary is a public K-5 school serving 433 students in Spokane, WA, operating within the generally high-performing Mead School District.

The school has experienced a notable decline in its statewide ranking over the past several years, now placing in the lower-middle tier. Academically, its proficiency in English and Math is below the district average, though its Science scores are a relative strength, exceeding both district and state averages. A key challenge is the school's effectiveness with Special Education students, where it ranks among the lowest in the state. Performance for male students has also dropped sharply recently, creating a significant gender gap. The school has a substantial population of students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, and this demographic shift appears correlated with its performance trajectory, as it works to adapt its supports for a higher-needs student body.

Comparisons with nearby schools highlight important patterns. Within the Mead School District, higher-poverty schools like Evergreen and its neighbor Shiloh Hills Elementary rank lower than lower-poverty district peers such as Skyline Elementary. However, being in Mead provides an advantage; Shiloh Hills and Evergreen outperform a geographically and demographically similar school like Linwood Elementary in the neighboring Spokane School District. Evergreen's resources, including spending per student and class size, are comparable to or better than some higher-performing Mead schools, indicating the need for targeted strategies to address its specific challenges and reverse its decline.

Open Quote My oldest son is in 6th grade and my youngest son is in 1st grade, my daughter will be starting in the Pre Kindergarten class next year. I have loved Evergreen Elementary since the day my family walked in the front door. The staff is great and the parent involvement is the most amazing thing I've ever seen. The only thing I would change about Evergreen Elementary is the food that is offered to our children in the public school setting. Unfortunately we're unable to afford sending the boys to school with sack lunches. I would like to see them offer better foods and a little more variety.

I love Evergreen Elementary!
