Summary

Woodmont K-8 School is a public K-8 school in Des Moines, WA, serving about 400 students within the Federal Way School District, which faces broader academic challenges across the region.

The school's overall academic performance has declined over the past decade and now ranks in the bottom quarter of Washington state schools. However, the picture is mixed: its math scores are notably stronger than the district average, and it shows significant strengths with specific student groups, such as a high ranking for African American student performance and marked improvement for students in special education. The school also invests more resources per student than several nearby schools like Nautilus K-8 School and Valhalla Elementary School.

Performance varies dramatically by grade, with strong 3rd-grade math but critically low 6th-grade English scores, indicating an inconsistent experience for students. Compared to eight nearby schools in the Federal Way School District, Woodmont ranks in the middle, performing better than schools like Sunnycrest Elementary School but lagging behind higher-performing peers such as Nautilus K-8 School. While many area schools in other districts like Highline School District and Kent School District rank lower, Woodmont's key challenge is providing consistent, high-quality instruction across all grades and subjects.

Open Quote WoodmontK-8 Elementary School is a model of excellence for other schools to follow. This dedicated team of teachers are led by Principle Donna Bogle. This teaching staff has committed the time and resources to make sure each student has every opportunity possible to achieve success. We moved to Des Moines last year, unsure of what we would find. My daughter went from hating school, at our other location, to coming home each day saying " I had the best day ever!". As a parent, that's when I knew we made the right decision to be here. There are rules, and methods of discipline are applied consistently and fairly. Children thrive in this environment because the behavioral expectations are clear. Classrooms are highly functional and learning is facilitated with every activity. Close Quote
