Summary

Fontana Elementary is a PK–8 public school serving 197 students in the Fontana J8 School District in Fontana, Wisconsin, a small lakeside community in Walworth County near Lake Geneva. In 2025–26, Fontana Elementary ranks 427th of 1,039 Wisconsin schools (59th percentile, 3 stars), while its district ranks 123rd of 432 (72nd percentile, 4 stars). That is a solidly above-average position, improved from the 48th–49th percentile in 2021–22 and 2022–23, but still below the school's own high of 83rd percentile in 2017–18.

Fontana's conditions are favorable. Its free/reduced-lunch rate fell to 17.77% in 2024–25 from 28.64% in 2022–23; per-student spending is $20,875; the student-teacher ratio is 9.3; and chronic absenteeism dropped from 24.0% in 2021–22 to 6.6% in 2024–25, well below the state's 17.3%. Fontana spends more per student than Reek Elementary, Eastview Elementary, Williams Bay Elementary, Walworth Elementary, and Sharon Community, and slightly less than Woods Elementary. Yet Reek, with similar poverty, lower spending, and larger classes, ranks in the 87th percentile, and Woods, with similar spending, ranks 77th. Those resource advantages are not translating into top-tier results.

Grade 8 is a clear strength: ELA 76.19% versus a state 54.38%, math 71.43% vs. 53.67%, social studies 80.95% vs. 64.63%, and science 76.19% vs. 51.86%. Grade 3 also shines, with ELA and math both at 71.43%. Grade 5 math, however, is a glaring weakness at 35.29% proficient against a state rate of 51.81%, far behind Eastview (62.81%), Woods (69.23%), Williams Bay (72.97%), and Reek (63.64%). Grade 4 ELA (47.06% vs. 53.87%) and grade 4 science (47.06% vs. 53.46%) also lag. Fontana still outperforms weaker nearby schools such as Walworth in most grades, especially in middle school. In 2025–26, the school ranked in the 69th percentile for female students but only the 44th for male students, a reversal from 2023–24.
