Wahluke High School

Wahluke High School in Mattawa, Washington, serves approximately 750 students in grades 9–12 and is part of the Wahluke School District. The school is in a central Washington community and serves a student population with very high reported economic need: 92.4% of students were eligible for free or reduced-price lunch in 2024–25. Statewide, the school ranked 359th out of 396 high schools, placing it in the 9th percentile, while its district ranked in the 3rd percentile among Washington districts.

Graduation and student-retention outcomes are important strengths. In 2024–25, 90.3% of students graduated, compared with 82.6% statewide, and the dropout rate was 5.8%, below both the Washington rate of 9.8% and the district rate of 7.5%. These results compare favorably with nearby Royal High School, which reported an 86.5% graduation rate and an 8.7% dropout rate. However, Royal serves a lower-need student population and reported higher per-student spending, so the schools do not operate under identical circumstances. Wahluke’s student-teacher ratio of 20.1 to 1 was similar to Royal’s 20.7 to 1.

Academic achievement is the school’s main challenge. In 2025–26, proficiency was 38.8% in English language arts, 18.03% in math, and 18.54% in science—well below Washington averages of 52.81%, 43.11%, and 50.95%. Results also declined from the previous year in all three subjects, especially science. ELA has been the strongest area historically, but recent gains have not been sustained. Royal High School had notably stronger ELA and science results, although its math score was only modestly higher. Nearby Sentinel Technical Alt School is a small alternative program serving just 36 students, so its lower graduation and higher dropout rates are not a direct comparison. Overall, preserving Wahluke’s strong graduation outcomes while improving math and science should be the central priority.
