Summary

Royal High School is a public grades 9–12 school in Royal City, Washington, serving 592 students in the rural Royal School District. The school is larger than nearby Sentinel Technical Alt School and smaller than Wahluke High School, both about 17–18 miles away. Royal currently ranks 246th out of 396 Washington high schools, placing it in the 38th percentile with a 2-star rating.

Royal’s overall direction is encouraging: its statewide ranking rose from the 5th percentile in 2020–21 to the 38th percentile in 2025–26. English Language Arts is the school’s clearest academic strength. In 2025–26, 58.74% of students were proficient, compared with 52.81% statewide and 46.47% across the district. Royal also exceeded Wahluke in ELA, math, and science. Mathematics remains the largest concern, however: only 21.68% of Royal students were proficient, compared with 43.11% statewide. Science proficiency was 38.76%, also below the state’s 50.95%. These results suggest that maintaining ELA progress while strengthening math instruction and science learning should be key priorities.

Graduation outcomes are stronger than the test scores might suggest. Royal’s 2024–25 graduation rate was 86.5%, above Washington’s 82.6%, although it declined from 92.1% the previous year. The dropout rate, 8.7%, was slightly below the state’s 9.8% but higher than Wahluke’s 5.8%. Royal’s results also vary among student groups: female students ranked at the 50th percentile, compared with the 27th percentile for male students, while English Language Learners ranked at the 21st percentile. These gaps deserve attention alongside the school’s academic priorities. Sentinel’s very small enrollment and alternative-school structure make comparisons difficult, and its suppressed ELA and math results are unknown rather than zero.
