Summary

Port Angeles High School is a public high school serving approximately 974 students in grades 9-12 within the Port Angeles School District, ranking as a strong 4-star school in the 71st percentile statewide.

The school demonstrates clear academic strengths, particularly in English Language Arts and Science, where it outperforms both the state average and nearby Sequim Senior High. It maintains a solid 85.5% graduation rate, which is higher than the district average. However, mathematics proficiency is an area for improvement, as it lags behind the district average. A notable strength is the school's consistent effectiveness in supporting students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, with performance rankings in the 78th percentile for this subgroup. The school serves as the academic anchor for its district, significantly outperforming the smaller alternative Lincoln High School in the same district across all metrics, despite Lincoln having higher per-student spending.

When compared to its natural peer, Sequim Senior High, Port Angeles High School holds a higher overall state ranking, though Sequim achieves a slightly higher graduation rate. PAHS shows a strong trajectory of improvement over the past decade and utilizes its resources effectively to serve a diverse student population, with nearly half qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. The school's performance indicates it is a solid choice for families, with particular support systems in place that benefit a wide range of students.

Open Quote Despite being a small city school, PAHS offers a surprisingly large, high quality selection of honors, AP, Running Start and "college in high school" offerings to serve college-bound students, as well as a full range of traditional shop and vocational courses for those who are headed for job preparation training.

Every year the school has students accepted to highly competitive colleges, and several National Merit scholars.

Students also compete at the national level for metalworking, woodworking, and pre-med studies competitions.

Additionally the district has a full music program, offering five bands, four orchestras and four choirs, plus an AP Music Theory course. Nearly half of all students take part in at least one music course. Close Quote
