Summary

Henderson Bay Alt High School is a small, alternative public high school serving 139 students in grades 9-12 within the highly-rated Peninsula School District in Gig Harbor, WA.

As an alternative school, Henderson Bay serves a student population with higher economic needs than its district peers, such as Peninsula High School and Gig Harbor High, and it operates with significantly more resources per student and a much lower student-to-teacher ratio. While its academic proficiency and graduation rates are generally below the district average, the school has shown a strong recent improvement trend, climbing from the 10th to the 48th percentile in statewide rankings over two years. Performance can vary considerably from year to year, which is common in smaller schools, and notable gaps exist, with male students currently outperforming female students according to state rankings.

Compared to other alternative options in the broader area, like Dr. Dolores Silas High School or Tacoma Online High School, Henderson Bay's performance is similar, and it outperforms schools serving populations with the highest needs. The school's mission is distinct from the district's comprehensive high schools, focusing on providing a non-traditional pathway for students, and its success includes important factors like student re-engagement that aren't fully captured by test scores alone.

Open Quote It was great at first till some of the current staff showed there true colors. It made me feel ashamed to be apart of a false adverstising school of some what called choice. In some ways it is, yet the students with a court order to be there is not a choice. Parents who force there kids to be there is not a choice. They say it's ur choice, guess what that's not always true. Some of the staff that's been here since 2014 when I started sadly were not that pleasant to have as a teacher, I hate to say. During my junior year was probably the worst year ever at HBHS. My English teacher was not at her best that year. I went to the principle as well as other students nothing changed to help us have a better understanding with eachother, it was a nightmare. When things wern't getting better I decided to transfer to ghhs for senior year. I'm excited to start a new year and I hope to have a better experience with teachers. High school isn't all about the education and grades. It's also the relationships and friendships you build with one another during those 4 years. Every student should be able to feel excited, not feel so down when they have to deal with that teacher or staff member that makes there high school experience a living hell. Close Quote
