Summary

Lydia Hawk Elementary is a public K-5 school serving about 500 students in Lacey, Washington, as part of the North Thurston Public Schools district, and it faces significant academic challenges with performance consistently below district and state averages.

The school's test scores in English, math, and science are lower than those at most nearby schools, including the much higher-performing Olympic View Elementary less than a mile away. Lydia Hawk serves a high percentage of students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, a challenge it shares with schools like Lacey Elementary and Mountain View Elementary, yet its academic ranking remains in the bottom quarter of Washington state schools. Interestingly, the school invests more resources per student and has a lower student-teacher ratio than these comparison schools, suggesting factors beyond funding are influencing outcomes.

Performance varies by grade and student group, with upper elementary grades and special education students facing particular struggles. While the school's statewide ranking has improved slightly recently, it has declined significantly from a decade ago. For parents, this indicates a school with substantial needs where the considerable resources provided have not yet translated into the academic success seen at other schools in the North Thurston Public Schools district with similar student populations.

Open Quote I have two kids who both attend Lydia Hawk and my 6th grader has been there since Kindergarten. It is a wonderful school. The staff and teachers are so friendly and helpful. You only have to walk in the doors and you have the feeling of being welcome. My kids have had teachers who are willing to go above and beyond their job description to help their students, not just in academics but in social and coping issues as well. They truly care about their kids. Close Quote
