Summary

Pleasant Glade Elementary is a public school serving about 560 students from Pre-K through 5th grade in the North Thurston Public Schools district in Lacey, WA, performing around the middle of all Washington elementary schools with a current 2-star rating.

The school has clear strengths, particularly in math, where student proficiency exceeds both the district and state averages and outperforms several nearby schools like Mountain View Elementary and Lydia Hawk Elementary. It also excels in supporting English Language Learners and students from low-income families, maintaining stronger academic results than some peer schools with similar levels of economic need. However, the school faces significant challenges in serving students in special education and has shown notable performance volatility year-to-year compared to more consistent schools like South Bay Elementary.

While Pleasant Glade spends more per student than other North Thurston Public Schools in the area, its overall academic outcomes are mid-tier when compared to schools like Olympic View Elementary, which spends less but has higher proficiency. Schools in the neighboring Olympia School District, such as Roosevelt Elementary School, generally perform higher, suggesting district-level factors may be at play.

Open Quote For context, our son was enrolled at pleasant glade for fourth grade and is 10 years old. If you're sending your child here you MUST monitor everything that will be taught to your child here. Thankfully the pandemic allowed me to hear all lessons being taught. Without this virtual learning environment, our family never would have known they would be teaching sex education to our 10-year-old. Furthermore, the school uses young students to complete surveys that are beyond their comprehension and inappropriate for their age group.

The first troubling incident our family encountered was overhearing frustration from my son. The teacher was walking the students through a 60+ question survey. My son stated, "I'm so frustrated, I have no idea what this stuff means." I sat and listened to the teacher state the questions out loud. Multiple students had issues and voiced their same frustration. The teacher instructed the students to "choose any answer even if you don't understand." This was my first instinct that this survey was questionable for their age group. If the school is instructing the students to take a survey shouldn't the students understand what they are being asked? Otherwise doesn't that just invalidate the results of the survey? However, I continued to listen and the next question the teacher went over made the situation worse. The teacher stated the next question, "This school has a welcoming environment that embraces the diversity of Race, Ethnicity, Gender, Religion, Sexual orientation." She actually repeated, "Sexual orientation" multiple times. I let my son know that he won't be finishing the survey and had him step out of the room. A simple solution to this issue would have been to send the survey home to parents FIRST to decide if they would allow their child to complete it. My guess is, most parents would have said no. I discussed my concerns with his teacher after the incident and she agreed that the survey was completely inappropriate and advised me to speak to the district.

The second incident occurred in art class. The teacher was discussing artists and then proceeded to show a video in class that gave the children a lesson on sexual orientations. Again, I had my son leave. When I spoke to the teacher she stated they never used the word "sexual orientation." However, the video was discussing different types of sexual orientations. This school completely oversteps parental boundaries! Needless to say, we have unenrolled our son. Close Quote
