Summary

Explorer Middle School is a public school serving about 777 students in grades 6-8 within the Mukilteo School District in Everett, WA, but it has seen a significant and steady decline in its statewide ranking over the past decade, now performing well below both district and state averages in all core subjects.

When compared to other middle schools in the area, Explorer's academic results are notably lower. For example, its proficiency rates in English, math, and science are roughly half those of higher-performing neighbors like Harbour Pointe Middle School and Olympic View Middle School, despite all being in the same district and having similar funding. The school also serves a higher percentage of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch than these peers. Performance varies widely among different student groups, with some subgroups performing very well while others, including students in special education, have historically struggled significantly.

This situation presents a puzzle, as Explorer has a relatively low student-to-teacher ratio and spends more per student than some higher-achieving schools nearby, suggesting that how resources are used is a critical factor. The close proximity of much higher-performing schools like Gateway Middle School in the Everett School District and others with similar student demographics but better outcomes indicates that improvement is possible within the community context.

Open Quote I have an anxiety disorder which negativity effects my ability to focus and do work, especially in a group setting. While I attended Explorer, I was frequently denied access to my as-needed medication for panic attacks, and met with rudeness when I could not accomplish a task as well or as quick as everyone else. I still have a few teachers who I loved, (Edwards, Demaris, Scaduto) and the counselor was great (Cassidy) but ultimately I wouldn't wish upon anyone else the hell that was Explorer. Close Quote
