Explorer Middle School is a public grades 6–8 school in Everett, Washington, serving 777 students in the Mukilteo School District. The school serves a relatively high-need population, with 64.86% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch in 2024–25. Explorer has an 18:1 student-teacher ratio and reported $19,682 in spending per student, both relatively favorable compared with nearby schools. The district ranks in the 54th percentile statewide, while Explorer ranks in the 30th percentile among Washington middle schools.

Academic results are below district and state averages in all three tested subjects. In 2025–26, 39.68% of students met standards in English language arts, 28.84% in math, and 33.04% in science. Math is the weakest area, particularly eighth grade, where proficiency was 24.34%. Science is another major concern: Explorer’s result was about 16 percentage points below the district and nearly 18 points below the state. Compared with nearby Olympic View Middle School and Harbour Pointe Middle School, Explorer was lower in every subject, including by nearly 26 points in science. However, Explorer performed better than Voyager Middle School in overall ELA and math.

Still, results remain below the school’s 2023–24 levels in all three subjects, so the improvement is not yet a clear long-term trend. Parents may want to ask about eighth-grade math support, science instruction, intervention programs, and services for English Language Learners and low-income students, whose recent effectiveness rankings were especially low. Higher-performing schools such as Olympic View Middle School and Harbour Pointe Middle School provide useful local comparison points.

I have an anxiety disorder which negativity effects my ability to focus and do work, especially in a group setting. While I attended Explorer, I was frequently denied access to my as-needed medication for panic attacks, and met with rudeness when I could not accomplish a task as well or as quick as everyone else. I still have a few teachers who I loved, (Edwards, Demaris, Scaduto) and the counselor was great (Cassidy) but ultimately I wouldn't wish upon anyone else the hell that was Explorer. Close Quote
