Summary

Chain Lake Elementary is a public PK-5 school serving 434 students in the Monroe School District in Snohomish, WA, and it stands out as a consistently improving school that performs above state averages.

Academically, Chain Lake's students outperform both district and state averages in English, Math, and Science, with the school recently earning a 4-star rating and ranking in the top 30% of schools statewide. It is particularly effective in supporting students from lower-income families, ranking in the top 15% statewide for that subgroup. The school achieves these strong results efficiently, with a lower per-student cost than many nearby schools. However, a notable area for improvement is its support for Special Education students, where its ranking has declined significantly in recent years.

When compared to other schools in the Monroe School District, Chain Lake is a strong performer. It significantly outpaces schools like Frank Wagner Elementary and Fryelands Elementary, though it trails the exemplary Salem Woods Elementary, showing there is a path to even higher achievement. The school's recent increase in students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch suggests changing community demographics that the school will need to navigate to maintain its positive trajectory.

Open Quote This is a letter I wrote to my friends on facebook today:

After homeschooling for 1/2 a year, I met with my kindergarteners new principal today! I think the biggest thing that came across today was the principal and special ed teacher that did the star and math testing in the school really care a lot about the kids. They also seemed to really know and like my kid (after only 3 weeks)! I also learned the teacher went a couple of extra miles for my son already! My son's in a really great environment!

As far as the work goes... my son tested in the highest reading catagory in the star test for K/1st grade. He has already been placed in the highest reading level for his class. The school doesn't do a K pull out math program so the teacher throws in a few harder questions for the kids who are doing well in math. (They also explained how the teacher has a tier structure for multiple learning levels in math.)

I walked away from the meeting knowing my son was in good hands. I also think the grin on my sons face at the end of the day and the requests to hang out with ALL his new friends goes a long way too! It's going to be a great 2nd half of the year! Close Quote
