Summary

Cathcart Elementary is a K-6 public school serving about 500 students in the Snohomish School District, a well-regarded district ranking in the top 20% statewide, and it has consistently earned a 4-star rating in recent years.

Academically, Cathcart reliably beats Washington state averages, with science being a particular standout strength. The school shows real effectiveness in supporting specific student groups, with recent dramatic improvement in outcomes for economically disadvantaged students and strong rankings for its special education services. It's important for parents to know that Cathcart serves a community with a higher level of economic need than many of its neighbors, which makes its solid academic performance noteworthy. For example, its rate of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch is more than double that of other district schools like Little Cedars Elementary School and Totem Falls.

When compared geographically, Cathcart is surrounded by some of the highest-performing schools in the region, such as Fernwood Elementary and Tambark Creek Elementary School, which rank in the top 5% of the state. While Cathcart's test scores are generally lower than these nearby schools, it maintains smaller class sizes and has shown a resilient, improving trajectory. Areas for families to inquire about include the support for 6th graders, where proficiency rates dip, and how the school builds on its clear successes in science and supporting vulnerable students.

Open Quote Our family moved from out of state two years ago. We specifically chose the home we now live in because it was near to the schools we wanted our four children to grow up in. My only regret is that we did not move early so that my two high school children could have had their elementary education and experience at Cathcart Elementary School. The teachers at Cathcart are highly educated and filled with a passion to teach. The support staff of the school is second to none. Led by their new principal, Cathcart is on the road of great success. It is wonderful to have our children learn about math, reading, science, literature, art, etc. at school. Cathcart takes things a step further and endeavors to teach its students the importance of community, of helping others, of respecting self and those around them. It is a joy to have children at Cathcart. The many parent volunteers who support the teachers and school activities help add to the refreshing spirit of Cathcart Elementary School. Close Quote

Open Quote This school isn't perfect, no schools are. This school has heart, very involved families, tight knit community and great teachers/staff. With the new principal starting the 2013 school year, Cathcart will excel more than it has in a long time. This school has a rich history. The aging building isn't really an issue and seems to have less problems than some of the newer schools in our district. I have had kids in Cathcart for a long time and will have kids there for a long time to come. I love this school. Close Quote

Open Quote The facility is a shambles. They should be ashamed for letting an elementary school get in this condition. Can i give this school a 1/2 star? Close Quote
