Lopez Middle High School is a small public school on Lopez Island serving grades 7–12, with 111 students in the Lopez Island School District. Its latest available ranking placed it 67th out of 438 Washington schools, in the 85th percentile, earning a four-star rating. This represents a major improvement from the 7th percentile in 2014–15 and reflects two consecutive years of strong statewide rankings. The school also serves a relatively high-need population: 58.56% of students qualified for free or reduced-price lunch in 2024–25. Its recent 13.3:1 student-teacher ratio is notably smaller than those at many nearby comprehensive schools.

Academic results are encouraging overall but uneven from year to year. In 2025–26, math proficiency was 44.23%, slightly above the state average of 43.11%, while English language arts proficiency was 51.92%, just below the state’s 52.81%. The school’s science result was suppressed by the state and cannot be evaluated. Grade-level results show particular strengths in 8th-grade math, at 50%, and 10th-grade math, at 45%, both above state averages. However, 7th- and 8th-grade ELA results were below the state. Results were stronger in 2024–25, when ELA and science exceeded state averages by substantial margins, so families may want to view the latest decline in ELA as an area to monitor rather than a settled trend.

The 2024–25 graduation rate was 88%, above Washington’s 82.6% but below Anacortes High School at 97.9% and both Oak Harbor High School and Friday Harbor High School at 93%. It compares favorably with Orcas Island High School in recent ranking and math performance, although comparisons require caution because Lopez includes middle-school grades while most nearby comprehensive schools serve grades 9–12. Lopez also spends $28,779 per student, more than nearby schools, partly because fixed costs are spread across a very small enrollment. The available 2021–22 dropout rate of 11.7% was above the state rate, but newer school-specific data was not provided.
