Summary:

The Orcas Island School District serves the Orcas Island community in San Juan County, Washington, with five schools spanning kindergarten through 12th grade and a total listed enrollment of 802 students. The district is ranked 44th of 238 districts statewide — the 82nd percentile with 4 stars — and is above the state average in all three tested subjects in both years shown. That strong overall position, however, masks real differences between its schools.

Science is the district's clearest strength, with every reported school above the state's 50.95% in 2025–2026. Orcas Island Elementary School reaches 75%, Orcas Island High School 69.39%, and Oasis K-12 60%. The elementary school is also the district's fastest-improving school, rising from 2 stars and 39th percentile in 2023–2024 to 4 stars and 82nd percentile in 2025–2026. Orcas Island Middle School is consistently above state in ELA, math, and science. Math is where the schools diverge: Elementary and Middle are above state, while High, at 26.32%, and Oasis, at 41.58%, fall at or below it. High's ELA also swung sharply, from 81.25% in 2024–2025 down to 56.41% in 2025–2026, and its rank slipped from 4 stars to 3.

Two schools warrant extra caution. Oasis K-12, the largest school at 331 students, is an alternative K–12 program with very low free/reduced lunch (3.32%), the highest student-teacher ratio (27.2), a 73.0% graduation rate versus the state's 82.6%, and a reported 25.0% dropout rate in 2023–2024. Its profile is not directly comparable to the traditional schools. Orcas Island Montessori Public enrolls just 24 students; its 2024–2025 ELA and math were above average, but 2025–2026 scores are suppressed by the state, so conclusions should remain tentative.
