Summary

Oak Harbor High School is a large, 3-star public high school serving about 1,562 students in grades 9-12 within the Oak Harbor School District, a community significantly influenced by its proximity to Naval Air Station Whidbey Island.

The school presents a notable contrast: it excels at graduating students, with a 93% graduation rate that is well above the state average, but it faces a serious challenge with academic proficiency, particularly in mathematics where only about 27% of students are proficient. This "graduation vs. proficiency" gap is its most defining characteristic. Furthermore, the school's performance varies widely for different student groups; data indicates it struggles most to serve military-connected and homeless students effectively, which is a critical finding for this community, while Hispanic students perform relatively well. The school's overall state ranking has been volatile historically but shows signs of modest, recent improvement.

Interesting comparisons emerge with nearby schools. While similar in graduation rates to Coupeville High School and Port Townsend High School, Oak Harbor's math proficiency is dramatically lower. The most striking comparison is with Anacortes High School, a 5-star school just 14 miles away, which has much higher proficiency rates in all subjects and spends more per student. This highlights a significant regional opportunity gap. Within its own district, the alternative iGrad Academy serves at-risk students, which may contribute to the main high school's strong graduation rate.

Open Quote This school is all over the map, they have alot of excellent programs BUT the nonteaching staff makes the administration of rules and codes listed in the student handbook a last priority. Discipline is arbitrary and fairly draconian. Advisory classes are pretty pointless (our advisory instructor didn't know who our child was after having her for 3 years), this school focuses on your child if they are an achiever and ignores them if they have any academic issues at all, homeschooling is the better option here. Open Quote This is a terrific school! The building is brand new and looks great! Plus, they offer a long list of AP classes, national-award-winning CTE classes, excellent music programs (the choir is especially good), and highly ranked sports teams. My son is a student at OHHS and loves it!! Close Quote
