Summary

Highland High School is a public grades 9–12 school in Cowiche, Washington, serving 366 students in a small, rural community within the Highland School District. The school offers a mixed academic picture: it is notably strong in English Language Arts (ELA) and graduation, but math is a persistent challenge. In 2025–2026, Highland ranked in the 37th percentile among Washington high schools, down from the 56th percentile the previous year.

ELA is Highland’s clearest academic strength. About 67.5% of students were proficient, higher than both the district’s 43.84% and Washington’s 52.81%. Highland trailed only West Valley High School among nearby traditional high schools and exceeded Naches Valley High School, Eisenhower High School, and Selah High School. However, ELA proficiency fell from 80.22% to 67.5% in one year. Math is more concerning: only 17.72% of students were proficient, compared with 43.11% statewide, and Highland trailed all nearby traditional schools. Science proficiency was 32.95%, close to the district but below the state and behind West Valley and Naches Valley.

Highland’s 92.0% graduation rate in 2024–2025 was substantially above Washington’s 82.6% and matched Naches Valley, while Selah posted 97.7%, West Valley 91.1%, and Eisenhower 86.5%. The school also appears relatively effective for several student groups, including migrant students, who ranked in the 88th percentile statewide. Families should also note that 67.21% of students qualified for free or reduced-price lunch and the student-teacher ratio rose to 22.6, higher than Naches Valley, Selah, and Eisenhower. Overall, Highland appears stronger at helping students complete high school and achieve in ELA than its testing profile suggests, with math improvement the most important priority.

Highland High School has excellent teachers with small classes. It was ranked as one of the top schools in Washington State and won a Washington State Achievement Award in 2010 for being in the top 5% overall. It has a high graduation and attendance rate and the is usually in the top for the Yakima Valley for the state tests. Close Quote
