Summary

West Valley High School is a large public high school serving approximately 1,500 students in grades 9-12 within the West Valley School District (Yakima), a district that performs well above the state average.

The school has clear strengths, particularly in graduating students successfully and in English Language Arts, where it significantly outperforms both its district and the state. However, it faces significant challenges in mathematics, where proficiency lags behind, and in serving students with disabilities, an area identified as needing urgent improvement. While the school operates with lower per-student spending and higher class sizes than some neighbors, it maintains a strong graduation rate, though its overall state ranking has declined in recent years.

Compared to comprehensive high schools in the neighboring Yakima School District, such as Davis High School and Eisenhower High School, West Valley High School shows notably higher proficiency in core subjects. Within its own district, schools like the West Valley Innovation Center have different resource models, and the West Valley Virtual Academy 9-12 serves a distinct population with different outcomes.

Open Quote The bully problem is huge there especially since the freshman campus merged. They no longer have a dress code. Girls wear shorts dresses and skirts that show their bottoms, shirts are too tight, too short, or cut too low revealing the breasts. Boys often have pants or shorts that don't fit revealing their bum. Pickup or drop off students has become a nightmare since the merge. The parking lot wasn't designed to have so many vehicles. Parents are as if not more disrespectful than their child. Students there have an entitlement attitude about them. Special needs students seem tucked away from mainstream. Making it difficult to make friends especially if you're new to the district. The superintendent dismisses parents when they tell him about these things. If your of low or moderate income best to find sources to help with costs of electives, dances and yearbook costs. Close Quote
