Summary

Cheney High School is a large public high school serving grades 9–12 in the Cheney, Washington, area, with 1,491 students and a relatively mixed economic community.

The school’s strongest results are in student completion and English Language Arts. In 2024–25, 94.4% of students graduated, compared with 90.2% in the Cheney School District and 82.6% statewide; the dropout rate was 3.2%, well below the state’s 9.8%. ELA proficiency reached 65.88% in 2025–26, ahead of the district’s 42.92% and the state’s 52.81%. Math is the clearest concern: only 31.53% of students were proficient, nearly matching the district but 11.58 percentage points below the state. Science proficiency was 42.64%, also below the state and district. These results show a school that is effective at keeping students enrolled through graduation, but that still needs to strengthen quantitative and scientific learning.

Cheney’s statewide ranking has improved substantially, rising from the 28th percentile in 2021–22 to the 57th percentile in 2025–26. However, it remains behind nearby large high schools such as Lewis & Clark High School, Ferris High School, and Medical Lake High School in overall ranking and in math and science. Cheney’s graduation rate is competitive with these schools, though, and its student population includes a higher share of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. Recent subgroup effectiveness measures have generally improved, while special education performance remains an area to watch. Overall, Cheney appears to be improving and offers strong completion outcomes, with math and science as the main priorities for continued progress.
