Summary

Centralia Middle School is a public school serving about 480 students in grades 7 and 8 in the Centralia School District, which faces broader challenges as it ranks in the bottom quartile of districts statewide.

The school serves a community with significant economic need, with about 75% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, which is higher than most nearby schools. Academically, the school has struggled, with its statewide ranking falling significantly over the past decade to the bottom quartile. Proficiency rates in English, math, and science are all below state averages, with mathematics being a particular area of concern at only 17% proficient. This is notably lower than neighboring Chehalis Middle School, which is just six miles away and serves a similar region but has better academic outcomes.

An interesting finding is that despite the school having higher per-student spending than many comparable schools, it yields the lowest academic results, suggesting challenges in how resources are used. Historical data shows the school was once more effective with certain student groups, indicating a capacity for success that has diminished. The school's struggles appear connected to district-wide factors, as other districts in the area like the Tumwater School District perform much better.

Open Quote This is the worst school I have ever dealt with. My child is in 7th grade and has had problems with this school since the first week of school in September 2017. The staff is rude, belittling, they harass student's, make police threat's to student's, when talking to parent's they will call your child a liar, and so on. They even call the school resource officer on my child and she was almost arrested for THEIR miscommunication. As a parent you will need to be ready for a battle and be involved with your child.
