Onalaska School District

Onalaska School District serves about 913 students in three schools—elementary, middle, and high school—covering grades PK–12 in the Onalaska area of Washington. The schools include Onalaska Elementary School with 437 students, Onalaska Middle School with 195 students, and Onalaska High School with 281 students.

Onalaska High School is the district standout in English language arts and graduation. About 61% of students are proficient in ELA, above both the district and state rates, and the graduation rate is 90%, compared with 82.6% statewide. However, math is a major concern: only about 21% of high school students are proficient, and science proficiency is about 43%. Onalaska Elementary School has the district’s strongest overall math performance, with about 41% proficiency, including an especially strong third-grade result of 53%. Its fifth-grade results need attention, with just 35% proficient in ELA and 23% in math.

Onalaska Middle School has a relative strength in science, at about 47% proficiency, but experienced the sharpest recent decline. From the previous year, its ELA, math, and science results all dropped substantially, and its school ranking fell from the 61st to the 37th percentile. Across the district, math performance decreases as students move from elementary to middle and high school, suggesting a need for stronger K–12 math support, especially during the transition into sixth grade and before high school. Science results also declined at all three schools, while high school ELA improved.
