Summary

Rainier Middle School is a small grades 6–8 school in the rural community of Rainier, Washington, serving 241 students as part of the four-star Rainier School District.

The district performs relatively well statewide, ranking 68th of 238 Washington districts, but the school’s latest results are more mixed. In 2025–2026, 45.13% of students were proficient in English language arts, 30.80% in math, and 43.75% in science—below both district and state rates in every subject. Math is the clearest concern, especially in sixth grade, at 24.69%, and eighth grade, at 28.75%. Seventh-grade math is a relative bright spot at 41.27%, nearly matching the statewide seventh-grade result. Science is also an important area for improvement because the school had the lowest science proficiency among the comparison schools, despite a small increase from the prior year. ELA declined from 51.09% to 45.13%, while math fell from 43.86% to 30.80%. The school’s overall ranking consequently dropped from the 58th percentile in 2024–2025 to the 44th percentile in 2025–2026.

Compared with nearby schools, Rainier is ahead of Nisqually Middle School and Tenino Middle School in several measures, but trails most others. For example, Washington Middle School exceeds Rainier by about 23 percentage points in ELA, 25 in math, and 31 in science. Yelm Middle School and Ridgeline Middle School are especially useful comparisons because they serve communities with similar economic-need levels and achieve stronger results. Rainier is smaller than most comparison schools, has a higher student-teacher ratio of 20.9, and spends $15,550 per student. One encouraging finding is its 66th-percentile effectiveness ranking for students from low-income households, well above the school’s overall ranking. Families may want to ask how seventh-grade instruction and the school’s support systems for economically disadvantaged students can be extended across all grades and subjects.
