Summary

Rainier Prep is a public charter middle school serving 359 students in grades 5-8 in Seattle's Rainier Valley, consistently earning a 4-star rating and ranking in the top quarter of all Washington schools.

The school stands out for its exceptional results with students from low-income families, significantly outperforming other nearby schools with similar student populations. For example, while about 74% of Rainier Prep's students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, its proficiency rates in English and Math are 40 to 50 percentage points higher than at schools like Showalter Middle School, Glacier Middle School, and Cascade Middle School, which serve a comparable community. This strong performance is reflected in its statewide rankings for specific student groups, placing in the top 15% for low-income students and performing very well for English Language Learners.

Rainier Prep invests more per student and maintains smaller class sizes than many comparison schools. While it shows a strong recovery and improvement trajectory since the pandemic, a challenge is ensuring academic growth continues through 8th grade, particularly in science. The school operates within the highly-ranked Rainier Prep Charter School District, which provides a different context than the traditional Highline or Tukwila School Districts where nearby schools are located.

Open Quote We love Rainier Prep! Our son started there in 5th grade and is in 8th grade now. He is challenged not only academically but taught as a whole person. His self esteem is increased and he strives to better himself. We will be sending our second son next year. The founder Maggie O'Sullivan is outstanding with passion for the kids. Every teacher our son has had is incredible. Close Quote
