Freeman School District

Freeman School District serves about 887 students across three schools covering grades PK–12: Freeman Elementary School, Freeman Middle School, and Freeman High School. Overall, the district ranks 31st among 238 Washington districts, placing it in the 87th percentile with a four-star rating. The schools are relatively small, with enrollment ranging from 201 middle school students to 385 elementary students.

Freeman Elementary School is the district’s strongest current academic performer. Its students exceed state averages by nearly 17 percentage points in English language arts and more than 27 points in math, although proficiency declined from the previous year and the school’s rating fell from five stars to four. Freeman Middle School has the most encouraging trend: its ranking rose from the 44th percentile to the 79th percentile over three years, and its ELA, math, and science results all improved in the latest year. It performs above state averages but remains below district averages, especially in math. Parents should also note that smaller student groups can make year-to-year percentages and rankings fluctuate.

Freeman High School combines a very strong 96% graduation rate with more uneven academic results. Its ELA proficiency is well above the state average, but math is slightly below the state rate and science is more than 10 points below it. The biggest district-wide concern is the decline in math performance from elementary school to middle and high school: 70.72% at the elementary level compared with 47.78% in middle school and 40.38% in high school. Families may therefore want to look closely at math and science support in the secondary grades, while recognizing the district’s strong elementary foundation, improving middle school, and excellent graduation outcome.
