Summary

Lynnhaven Middle is a grades 6–8 middle school in Virginia Beach, VA, serving approximately 727 students as part of Virginia Beach City Public Schools. The school has shown steady improvement in recent years, climbing from the 50th percentile in 2023–2024 to the 61st percentile in 2025–2026, when it ranked 162nd out of 416 Virginia middle schools. That places it in the upper-middle range of nearby schools, though it serves a student population with far higher economic need than most neighbors—93.81% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, a rate second only to Bayside Middle among nearby schools.

Lynnhaven's strengths are notable given its high-need enrollment. Students taking advanced courses perform exceptionally well: 8th-grade Algebra I proficiency is nearly perfect (98.91%), and Earth Science scores (98.10%) are well above state averages. The school also excels in 6th-grade math (79.01% proficient versus 63.19% statewide) and in reading across several grade levels. Hispanic students rank in the 86th percentile statewide, an outstanding result. The school invests heavily in its students—spending $19,932 per student, the highest among nearby schools, and maintaining a 9.9:1 student-teacher ratio, the lowest in the area. Chronic absenteeism has also fallen dramatically, from 30.7% in 2021–2022 to 13.8% in 2024–2025, now below the state average.

The main challenges lie in on-grade-level math and science. Only 33.58% of 7th graders and 42.86% of 8th graders are proficient in math, and 8th-grade science proficiency sits at 45.97%, all below state averages. Subgroup results are mixed: African American students (45th percentile) and disabled students (43rd percentile) lag behind the school overall, and female students (54th percentile) trail male students (66th percentile). Compared with nearby schools, Lynnhaven outpaces high-poverty peers like Larkspur Middle (37th percentile) and Bayside Middle (30th percentile), though it still trails affluent schools like Great Neck Middle (93rd percentile) and Princess Anne Middle (96th percentile).

Open Quote Not the same. New administration. Teachers still wonderful, but unhappy. Love coaches and of course Mr. McClendon. Treat children like they are in reform school. I think Assistant Vice Principal is originally from Renaissance. For Educators they do not appear to enjoy children too much. Close Quote
