Summary

Stafford Senior High in Fredericksburg, VA serves 2,198 students in grades 9-12, making it one of the largest high schools in the region as part of Stafford County Public Schools. The school currently ranks 169th out of 331 Virginia high schools, placing it at the 49th percentile with a 2-star rating — a significant improvement from just two years ago when it sat at the 23rd percentile. Roughly 39% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a moderate-poverty student population.

Academically, Stafford shows a mixed picture. The school's 10th-grade English Reading proficiency is strong at 81.8%, well above the state average of 63.9%, and 12th-grade Biology proficiency is 92.6% compared to 75.4% statewide. Writing results, however, are inconsistent — 12th-grade Writing proficiency is just 45.8% versus a 65.0% state average — and 9th-grade Geometry (79.6%) and Algebra II (90.8%) both trail district and state averages. Several student subgroups perform notably well, including African American students, who rank in the 63rd percentile statewide, and English Language Learners in the 55th percentile. With a student-teacher ratio of 11.5, Stafford is well-staffed compared to many regional high schools.

The biggest concerns at Stafford are attendance and graduation. Chronic absenteeism stands at 29.0%, nearly double the statewide rate of 14.8% and the highest among Stafford County's high schools. The graduation rate is 89.8%, the lowest in the district, and the dropout rate spiked to 6.7% this past year. This stands in sharp contrast to Mountain View High, just seven miles away, which ranks 68th statewide with a 95.9% graduation rate and 17.9% chronic absenteeism; Colonial Forge High (91st, 94.4%) and North Stafford High (84th, 90.4%) also outrank Stafford despite similar demographics. The good news is that Stafford has been improving and outperforms nearby high-poverty schools like Chancellor High and Massaponax High on most metrics. If the school can tackle its attendance problem, its recent gains in test performance could translate into a more complete turnaround.
