Summary

Lake Ridge Middle is a large public school in the Washington, D.C. suburb of Woodbridge, VA, serving 1,487 students in grades 6–8 within Prince William County Public Schools. It has consistently ranked in the upper third of Virginia middle schools, landing at 123rd out of 416 (70th percentile, 4 stars) for 2025–2026. About 69% of students now qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, up sharply from 39% two years earlier, yet academic performance has held steady. Chronic absenteeism (11.6%) is also lower than both the district (13.8%) and state (14.8%) averages.

Reading is its standout subject. Reading proficiency beats district and state averages at every grade level: 79.9% in 6th, 81.5% in 7th, and 84.4% in 8th. Civics (88.5% proficient) and science (74.6%) are also well above state averages. The school outperforms six same-district middle schools with nearly identical poverty rates — Potomac Middle, Rippon Middle, George M. Hampton Middle, Woodbridge Middle, Fred M. Lynn Middle, and Stuart M. Beville Middle — all ranking in the 15th to 34th percentile statewide. Its reading scores are even competitive with wealthier Fairfax County Public Schools, including South County Middle and Irving Middle. The school also posts strong outcomes across multiple student groups, including African American, Hispanic, low-income, and military-connected students.

The clear weak spot is grade-level math. While 6th grade math (71.3%) beats district and state averages, 7th grade (43.6%) and 8th grade (39.4%) math lag behind — with 8th grade below both district and state averages. Yet students in advanced math are thriving: 94.5% of 8th graders pass Algebra I, and 100% pass in both 7th grade Algebra I and 8th grade Geometry. This two-track pattern shows the school excels at accelerating advanced learners but needs stronger support for grade-level students. The school does all this while spending less per student ($9,209) than any comparable nearby school, and with a higher student-teacher ratio (16.0). Targeted math intervention in 7th and 8th grade could push it into the top quartile statewide.

Open Quote The school provides a safe, supportive learning environment with teachers and administrators who care. Students are expected to mature, grow, and take more responsibility at Lakeridge Middle, but my daughter has flourished here. Close Quote
