Summary

Potomac Middle in Dumfries, VA serves roughly 931 students in grades 6 through 8 and is part of Prince William County Public Schools, which ranks in the 65th percentile of Virginia districts. The school itself, however, has consistently placed in the bottom quarter of Virginia middle schools for the past decade, currently sitting at the 22nd percentile for 2025–2026. About 70% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch, and the school's chronic absenteeism rate of 16.3% is the highest among ten nearby comparable schools, exceeding both the district average of 13.8% and the state average of 14.8%.

Academic achievement trails district and state averages in nearly every subject. On-grade-level math proficiency ranges from 39% to 55% by grade compared with 42% to 67% district-wide, while reading proficiency sits at roughly 62% to 65%, well below the district's 73% to 75%. The gap is especially striking when compared with nearby schools serving similar populations: Herbert J. Saunders Middle and Lake Ridge Middle have nearly identical free/reduced lunch rates yet rank at the 74th and 70th percentiles, respectively. Even Potomac's lower student-teacher ratio of 12.9 has not translated into higher achievement, as schools like Louise A. Benton Middle and Lake Ridge Middle carry higher ratios yet outperform it substantially.

There are bright spots. Eighth graders taking Algebra I achieve 98% proficiency, matching the district and exceeding the state, while English Language Learner students have climbed from the 27th to the 63rd percentile over three years, and multiracial students rank in the 80th percentile. However, these successes are uneven: White students rank at the 5th percentile, and disabled students have dropped sharply from the 40th to the 15th percentile. For parents, the key takeaway is that while attendance and overall performance remain concerns, the school's improving ELL outcomes and strong advanced math results show that targeted strategies can work—and may point the way toward lifting achievement across all student groups.
