Summary

Irving Middle is a grades 7–8 school in Springfield, VA, serving 1,204 students in Fairfax County Public Schools, and it ranks 49th out of 416 Virginia middle schools for 2025–2026 — a 4-star, 88th percentile performance that places it among the top tier of middle schools in northern Virginia. The school has shown steady improvement since a post-pandemic dip, climbing from 107th in 2022–2023 to its current top-50 position, though it hasn’t quite returned to the 5-star ranks it held in 2018–2019 and 2020–2021.

For parents, the standout news is Irving’s strength in reading and science, plus its exceptional advanced math pipeline. Eighth-grade reading proficiency hits 90.12% — the highest among nearby schools, including Frost Middle and South County Middle — and 8th grade science reaches 85.71%, far above the state average of 64.72%. In advanced math, 100% of 8th graders taking Geometry and 7th graders taking Algebra I are proficient, and 96.75% of 8th graders in Algebra I are proficient. Irving also posts strong results for specific student groups: students with disabilities rank in the 94th percentile statewide, African American students in the 93rd, and multiracial students in the 90th. Chronic absenteeism (11.1%) is lower than the district (11.9%) and state (14.8%) averages, and the school spends less per pupil ($10,188) than nearly every peer school, including Key Middle ($14,866) and Poe Middle ($15,516).

The main area needing attention is standard on-grade-level math: only 47.41% of 8th graders are proficient in 8th grade math, barely above the state average and well below the school’s own reading and science results. This gap between advanced and standard math is the clearest opportunity for improvement. Still, Irving compares favorably to many nearby schools — Glasgow Middle ranks 371st and Jackson Middle ranks 325th in the state — while Twain Middle, just a few miles away, sits at 180th. Irving is clearly a high-efficiency, high-quality option for families, and if it can lift standard math scores to match its other subjects, it would likely rejoin Virginia’s top 40 middle schools.

Open Quote Irving is an abysmal Middle School when it comes to preparing students for high school. The principal has a 'turn in homework when you want policy' that does kids no good in preparing for high and life. But anything to keep the tests scores up. The principal has certainly learned from the failed Superintendent. Do what you can to send your children elsewhere! Close Quote
