Summary

Springfield Elementary is a small PreK-5 school in Rileyville, VA, serving 208 students as part of Page County Public Schools. The school ranks 501st of 1,111 Virginia elementary schools (55th percentile, 3 stars) — a drop from last year's 4-star ranking but still well ahead of every nearby school in the region. Springfield serves a high-poverty population, with 75.5% of students qualifying for free/reduced lunch in 2024-25.

Springfield posts the strongest test scores in its region. Average math proficiency is 75.9% and reading is 72.2%, beating every comparison school, including Luray Elementary and Hilda J. Barbour Elementary. Fifth-grade science is 77.8%, well above the state average of 68.8%. The school also stands out for its work with economically disadvantaged students — its low-SES subgroup ranks in the 68th percentile statewide, a consistent strength over the past three years. Attendance is another bright spot: only 9.6% of students were chronically absent, half the district rate and below the state average of 14.8%.

Springfield is also efficient with its resources, spending $9,364 per student — less than several nearby schools that post weaker results — while maintaining a favorable 13:1 student-teacher ratio. The main item to watch is a recent dip in 4th-grade scores, with math falling from 93.6% to 72.0% and reading from 83.9% to 69.2%. Since 5th-grade scores remain strong, this looks like a cohort effect rather than a schoolwide trend. Overall, Springfield is a positive outlier in a region where most surrounding elementary schools rank in the bottom half of Virginia.

Open Quote As a child I attended Springfield Elementary, and most of my family did as well. I feel I received a top notched education because the teachers always believed in the students and their abilities to learn and achieve. My children attend Springfield Elementary, well one does now, the other has moved up to high school. Both of my children have scored 600s, or excellent on several the Va SOLs, they are also honor roll students. I truly feel without the excellent teaching staff and current principal, this school would not be the success I see it to be. Keep up the excellent work faculty and staff at Springfield Elementary! By the way I graduated high school, joined the military and graduated 2nd in my specialized training class, thanks to the positive study habits I was taught at Springfield. I also earned an Associates Degree in Applied Science with a Major as a Paralegal/Legal Assisting. Close Quote
