Summary

South County High serves roughly 2,106 students in grades 9–12 in Lorton, Virginia, as part of Fairfax County Public Schools, one of the strongest districts in the state. The school ranks in the 61st percentile statewide, earning a 3-star rating, but that mid-tier rank understates some genuinely impressive outcomes. Most notably, South County graduates students at an exceptional rate: 97.2% in 2024–2025, compared with 92.7% for the district and 92.3% statewide. Its 1.7% dropout rate is also far better than the district average of 5.1%, and the school has posted dropout rates under 1% for three of the past four years.

Reading proficiency is another clear strength. On SOL tests, 11th graders at South County scored 93.86% proficient, beating the district (90.89%) and state (88.13%). The school also stands out for strong results with several student groups that often face additional challenges, including students with disabilities, African American students, military-connected families, and students from low-income households. Within Fairfax County, South County sits in the middle of the pack — behind West Springfield High and Lake Braddock Secondary, but ahead of Edison High and Annandale High. Across the county line, the contrast is stark: Woodbridge High, Freedom High, and Gar-Field High all post lower graduation rates, higher chronic absenteeism, and significantly weaker reading scores.

The main areas to watch are math and science. Ninth-grade Algebra I proficiency fell to 72.66% in 2025–2026, well below the district (81.5%) and state (80.21%), after three years above the state average. Chemistry and Biology scores also trail the state at the 10th-grade level. Chronic absenteeism has improved to 14.4%, nearly matching the state average, though still slightly above the Fairfax district rate of 11.9%. Overall, South County is a solid choice for families seeking a school with strong graduation outcomes, excellent reading instruction, and a track record of supporting diverse learners — while keeping an eye on math and science consistency.

Open Quote After having a few children in the school system at all different academic levels I can say the school system works great if you have a straight A student but not for an average student or a child that needs extra support. If your child needs extra assistance they are like a burden on the teachers who only want to deal with the straight A students who do not need any extra help. Close Quote
