Summary

Cub Run Elementary is a PK–6 school in Centreville, VA, serving 620 students as part of Fairfax County Public Schools, a district that ranks in the 70th percentile statewide. The school currently holds a 3-star rating, ranking 511th out of 1,111 Virginia elementary schools (54th percentile) for 2025–2026, placing it mid-pack among its neighbors in western Fairfax County.

Cub Run's clearest strength is its 6th grade performance, which is dramatically above district and state averages in both reading (91% proficient vs. 80% district and 73% state) and math (86% vs. 69% district and 63% state). The school also has a strong attendance record: chronic absenteeism has fallen from 15% in 2022–2023 to just 9.6% in 2024–2025, well below the state rate of 14.8% and better than several nearby schools like Virginia Run, Bull Run, London Towne, Brookfield, and Deer Park. In addition, the school has made notable equity gains, with its low-income students jumping from the 21st percentile statewide in 2023–2024 to the 51st percentile in 2025–2026, and Hispanic students improving from the 46th to 60th percentile over the same period.

The biggest concern is 5th grade. Math proficiency (62%) is more than 10 points below the state average, and science proficiency fell nearly 18 points in one year, from 81% to 63%, while district and state results stayed flat. Male students have also remained in the high-40s percentile for three consecutive years. Cub Run outperforms higher-poverty neighbors like Centre Ridge and Brookfield, but trails more affluent peers such as Poplar Tree, Greenbriar West, Powell, and Lees Corner—even though Cub Run spends more per student than several of those higher-ranked schools. With strong attendance and excellent 6th grade results, the school has a solid foundation, but addressing the 5th grade slump and closing gaps for male, Asian, and White students will be key to regaining its earlier top-tier rankings.
