Summary

Powell Elementary is a large PK-6 school in Centreville, Virginia, serving 872 students as part of Fairfax County Public Schools. The school consistently ranks among the top 20% of Virginia elementary schools, placing 207th out of 1,111 in 2025-2026 with a 4-star rating. Attendance is a key strength: only 7.1% of students were chronically absent in 2024-2025, far below the district's 11.9% and the state's 14.8% rates. About 21.7% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch — a moderate level compared with many nearby schools, which range from roughly 10% to over 80%.

Math is Powell's standout subject. In 2025-2026, 4th-grade math proficiency reached 92.11% and 6th-grade math hit 92.78% — the highest among all nearby elementary schools in both grades, and well above district and state averages. The school also posts exceptional results with English language learners, ranking in the 84th percentile statewide in 2025-2026 after reaching the 94th percentile in 2023-2024. Powell's overall 81st percentile rank places it just behind Poplar Tree Elementary and Willow Springs Elementary, but comfortably ahead of Centreville Elementary, Eagle View Elementary, and London Towne Elementary.

A few caveats are worth noting. Powell's student-teacher ratio of 16.1 is the highest among nearby schools, though it continues to deliver strong academics despite that load. Fifth-grade math dropped from 87.38% in 2024-2025 to 74.14% in 2025-2026, a notable decline even though it still beat district and state averages. The school also does not report 6th-grade Algebra I results, unlike Willow Springs Elementary, Greenbriar West Elementary, and Poplar Tree Elementary, which all showed 100% proficiency — a potential consideration for families seeking advanced math acceleration. Support for disabled students, while improved from the 26th to 49th percentile in two years, remains the school's most significant area for growth. Overall, Powell Elementary is a strong, well-rounded choice with excellent math outcomes and standout support for English learners.

Open Quote This is a very happy, friendly, yet challenging school. The energy and warmth is palpable from the minute you step into the office. The teachers and staff are seasoned professionals who not only nurture, but push your child. I come from a family that has groomed its children for the Ivy Leagues for generations. I was quite worried about sending my daughter to a large public school, especially one that is not "ranked" #1 in the metropolitan area. However, this school exceeds my expectations in every respect. Although it is large, it has an unbelievably small, welcoming, friendly, feel and the children receive an extreme amount of one-on-one quality attention and focus from everyone in the school.
