Summary

Utah Virtual Academy is an alternative public charter virtual school serving grades K-12 with 1,732 students in Murray, Utah. While the school has a 4-year graduation rate of 88.8%, it underperforms academically compared to nearby schools and the state average.

Utah Virtual Academy's test scores are significantly lower than the state averages across all grade levels and subjects. For example, in 3rd grade math, only 23.8% of Utah Virtual Academy students scored proficient or better, compared to the state average of 48.6%. The school also has a high chronic absenteeism rate of 23.8%, which is much higher than the state average. Additionally, Utah Virtual Academy serves a higher proportion of students from low-income families, with 52.37% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch.

When compared to nearby schools, the differences become even more apparent. For instance, American Preparatory Academy - Accelerated School, located just 5.46 miles away, has significantly higher test scores across all grade levels and subjects. The data suggests that the virtual learning model may present unique challenges for students, and the school may need to focus on addressing the needs of its more disadvantaged student population to improve academic performance and graduation rates.

Open Quote We enjoyed our time with UTVA. The principals and teachers were wonderful. The K12, inc. curriculum is amazing! The fact that it is a public school, it is beholden to the regulations like Race to the Top and Common Core, and emphasized preparing for standardized tests. It took the love of learning out of it. UTVA, with the K12 curriculum had educated my kids far above what their peers in conventional public schools, so our only choice was homeschooling. And we love it.

My kids got mostly 100s on the CRTs. UTVA administers the CRTs different from "regular" public schools. Where those schools spend a whole week on the tests, and often has the elementary teachers read the questions for the students, and in some cases, even narrows down answers for them, UTVA students complete the CRTs in a day or two, and they read the questions on their own with no adult intervention. Open Quote Don’t send your kids to Utah Virtual Academy. Their standardized test scores are low, the principals are controlling and condescending, and the teachers and administrators talk to middle and high school students as if they are elementary students. UTVA activities are focused on younger students, so middle and high school students end up feeling really uncomfortable at them. (if you want the K12 curriculum with much better leadership and very caring teachers, check out Alpine Online: http://alpineonline.alpineschools.org/) The UTVA high school curriculum has a strong liberal bias and many of the courses are outdated, cheaply made and produced by third parties. There are also many technical glitches that cause students to receive “F”s or have to redo their work.

Look at the state comparisons. Do you really want this for your kids?
