Summary

Bear River High is a public school serving grades 10–12 in Garland, Utah, with about 1,194 students in the rural Box Elder area. The school’s strongest results are in graduation and student retention: its 91.4% graduation rate is above the Box Elder District and Utah averages, while its 6.6% dropout rate is below both. However, Bear River ranks 114th of 139 Utah high schools, placing it in the 18th percentile with a one-star rating. Its ranking has declined considerably from 53rd of 123 schools in 2017–2018.

Academic achievement is the school’s main challenge. Only 41.5% of 10th graders were proficient in English language arts, 22.1% in math, and 24.2% in science—below state results in every subject. Science is the largest concern, at 15.1 percentage points below Utah’s rate. Math has remained in the high teens or low twenties for several years, while ELA has improved at times but has not shown sustained progress. Bear River also has a serious attendance problem: 38.8% of students were chronically absent in 2024–2025, compared with 23.8% statewide and 32.0% in the district. That rate was much higher than at nearby Box Elder High, Sky View High, and Green Canyon High School.

Comparisons with nearby schools show substantial room for improvement. Green Canyon High School ranks 13th statewide and reports much stronger graduation, attendance, math, and science outcomes, while Mountain Crest High has recently made a notable ranking improvement. Bear River’s student-teacher ratio and percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch are similar to several nearby comprehensive schools, so those factors alone do not explain the performance gap. Overall, the clearest priorities are reducing chronic absenteeism, strengthening science and math instruction, and building on the school’s comparatively solid graduation and dropout results.
