Box Elder District

Box Elder District serves approximately 10,578 students across 18 schools in a mix of larger communities and small rural areas, offering elementary, middle, and high school grades. School sizes vary greatly, from 1,641 students at Box Elder High to only 8 students at Grouse Creek Elementary. Overall, the district ranks near the middle of Utah districts, at 50th of 92, with a 2-star rating. Parents will find substantial differences among schools, particularly in attendance and elementary academic performance.

Garland School is the district’s strongest all-around elementary school, ranking in the 81st statewide percentile and achieving strong ELA, math, and science results. Its 2.3% chronic absenteeism rate is also much lower than the district’s 32.0%. Three Mile Creek School is another academic standout, especially in science, although its absenteeism rate is high at 38.2%. Fielding School performs well in math and science but has a notable grade 3 ELA weakness. Golden Spike Elementary has made one of the district’s largest ranking improvements. In contrast, Lake View School, North Park School, and Century School have weaker rankings or test results, while Mckinley School has the district’s highest reported absenteeism.

For secondary schools, Box Elder High has the strongest academic profile and the lowest high-school absenteeism, while Bear River High has the best graduation and dropout rates but comparatively weak test performance. Sunrise High School has the greatest completion concerns, with an 83.2% graduation rate and 14.2% dropout rate. Across the district, high-school math and science are clear academic priorities, and chronic absenteeism is the broadest systemwide concern. The two middle schools also differ noticeably in attendance: Harris Intermediate reports 23.4% chronic absenteeism compared with 35.0% at Young Intermediate. Because some rural schools have very small enrollments and older ranking data, their percentages and spending figures should be interpreted cautiously.
