Middle Schools in Tooele District

Tooele District’s three middle schools serve grades 7–8 and enroll 2,159 students in the Tooele area: Clarke N. Johnsen Junior High, Tooele Junior High, and Grantsville Junior High. All are part of the Tooele District, which serves communities west of the Salt Lake Valley. The schools have noticeably different strengths: Grantsville leads academically, Clarke has the strongest reported attendance, and Tooele faces the greatest combination of academic and attendance challenges.

Tooele Junior High reports the lowest student-teacher ratio, but it has the lowest overall academic average, the lowest current state percentile, and the highest chronic absenteeism rate at 35%. The clearest concern is seventh grade, where English, mathematics, and science proficiency all fall below district and state results; eighth-grade performance is considerably stronger. Across the area, English and science results generally lag statewide performance, while mathematics varies considerably by school. Parents comparing these schools may want to look closely at attendance supports, seventh-grade transition programs, and subject-specific strengths rather than relying on district ratings alone.
