Summary

Willis High School in Willis, TX, is a large public high school serving 2,809 students in grades 9-12 as part of the Willis Independent School District (Isd), which has a 2-star rating. The school has consistently received a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger over the past decade, indicating stable but below-average performance compared to other Texas high schools. Over half of its students (53.26%) are eligible for free or reduced lunch, reflecting a significant population from low socio-economic backgrounds.

Willis High School shows significant test score gaps compared to nearby higher-performing schools. For example, in Algebra I (2025-2026), Willis scored 33.06%, nearly 30 percentage points behind Lake Creek High School (62.08%) and 40 points behind New Waverly High School (73.08%). In English I Reading, Willis (51.77%) trails Lake Creek (76.25%) and New Waverly (77.66%) by over 24 points. However, there is a bright spot in Biology, where Willis (66.03%) is much closer to the state average (70.51%) and has shown consistent improvement over the last four years, rising from 46% in 2022-2023 to 66% in 2025-2026. The school also has a strong graduation rate of 94.3% and a low dropout rate of 0.5%, suggesting it is effective at keeping students on track to graduate.

When compared to Conroe High School, which is only 5 miles away and has a similar percentage of students on free/reduced lunch (59.35%), Willis still underperforms in most subjects. For instance, in 2025-2026, Conroe scored 70.02% in Biology (vs. 66.03% for Willis) and 59.48% in English II (vs. 53.33%). This suggests that challenges at Willis are not solely due to student demographics but also school or district-level effectiveness. Additionally, Willis High School's per-student spending ($8,730) is lower than the state average and many neighbors, including New Waverly ($14,666), which may contribute to its academic challenges.

Open Quote I went to WHS all 4 years of high school. It was the greatest experience of my life. I had Mr. Patton (the coolest principle ever) as my principle, and was sad to hear he left the school after my graduation. I was involved in all kinds of extracurricular activities and AP classes. I can honestly say I am thankful for my teachers at that school, all of which actually cared for me personally and in classes. Best school in the area! Close Quote
