Summary

William Lipscomb Elementary is a PK-5 school in the Lakewood/East Dallas area serving 387 students as part of the Dallas Independent School District (Isd), and it has recently emerged as a standout turnaround story, jumping from the 35th percentile statewide in 2022-2023 to the 79th percentile in 2025-2026, earning a 4-star rating.

What truly sets Lipscomb apart is its exceptional performance for students from low-income backgrounds. With over 76% of its students economically disadvantaged, the school ranks in the 88th percentile for serving this subgroup—a stark contrast to nearby schools. For example, Lakewood Elementary (99th percentile overall) serves a much wealthier population (under 10% free/reduced lunch), while schools with similar poverty rates like Mount Auburn Steam Academy (92.88% poverty, 57th percentile) and Ignacio Zaragoza Elementary (94.52% poverty, 33rd percentile) do not achieve the same results. Lipscomb proves that high poverty does not have to mean low performance. The school also excels in 3rd-grade math, with 74.47% of students proficient compared to the district average of 42.39%, and it spends more per student ($13,884) than Lakewood ($10,624) or Solar Preparatory School For Girls At Bonham ($10,556), suggesting effective resource allocation for its higher-needs population.

While Lipscomb has strong foundations in reading and early math, it faces two key challenges. First, 5th-grade math is a persistent weakness, with only 46.15% of students proficient in 2025-2026, below the state average. Second, the school must address a significant equity gap in serving its African American students. Overall, Lipscomb is a rising star in a polarized neighborhood—sitting between elite Lakewood Elementary and struggling schools like Cesar Chavez Learning Center (7th percentile)—and is the only school in the area showing a clear, rapid upward trajectory, making it a compelling option for families seeking a strong, improving school.

Open Quote this school used to be all about the community and neighbourhood and WANTED parental involvement. but as of this year it is just the exact OPPOSITE! staff members run parents and family out of the school and away from the campus and even went as far as to lock the gates around the entire school causing a fire hazard if there were to be an emergency. also the drop off and pick up procedures are deplorable. I have 2 sons at lipscomb one is in kinder and one is in 3rd grade and it is disgusting the way they FORCE us to line up to drop off and pick up our kids. i am transferring BOTH my sons as soon as the new principal signs off on the form. i DO NOT recommend this school to any one. the pta is also disgusting!
