Summary

J L Long Middle is a public school in the Lakewood/East Dallas area serving 1,079 students in grades 6-8 as part of the Dallas Independent School District (Isd), with about 64% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch. This school has shown consistent improvement over the past decade, rising from the 35th percentile statewide in 2015-2016 to the 59th percentile in 2025-2026, making it a strong academic performer within its diverse urban neighborhood.

J L Long stands out for its exceptional advanced math program, with an impressive 88.27% of students proficient in Algebra I—far exceeding the district (59.35%) and state (54.03%) averages. The school also demonstrates strong reading proficiency across all three grade levels, consistently scoring above both district and state averages. However, this success is not uniform: while the school performs exceptionally well for some student groups, it faces challenges in standard 8th-grade mathematics, where only 32.42% of students are proficient, well below the state average of 47.24%. This creates a "tale of two schools" dynamic, where an outstanding advanced track coexists with a struggling standard curriculum. Nearby, Highland Park Middle (3.4 miles away) serves a highly affluent community and ranks in the 99th percentile, while William B Travis Vanguard Academy Of Academically Tag (3 miles away) is a magnet school achieving near-perfect scores across all subjects.

Compared to other Dallas ISD middle schools, J L Long spends $10,344 per student (moderate for the area) and has a student-teacher ratio of 16.3, slightly higher than most neighbors. The school has shown a positive trend for special education students, who ranked in the 59th percentile in 2025-2026 after some volatility. However, the dropout rate is a concern, spiking to 5.2% in 2022-2023 before dropping to 1.9% in 2023-2024, still higher than the district average. For parents, J L Long offers a strong reading foundation and an exceptional advanced math program, but families should investigate how the school supports students in standard math classes and monitors overall student retention.

Open Quote They let a child get beat up. The child ended up getting a concussion. The school is not taking responsibility, and to top it off - they're refusing to give out the video to the parents. Close Quote
