Summary

Tom C Gooch Elementary is a PK-6 campus in Dallas, TX, serving 374 students within the Dallas Independent School District (Isd), where over 90% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. This school stands out for its exceptional early reading success: in 3rd grade, 87.5% of students were proficient in reading, which is 36.4 percentage points higher than both the district and state averages, and the highest among nearby schools like Harry C Withers Elementary (78.69%) and Walnut Hill International Leadership Academy (65%). However, the school experiences a dramatic "4th grade slump," with reading proficiency dropping from 87.5% to 39.29% and math from 54.55% to 21.95% between 3rd and 4th grade—a much steeper decline than at peer schools.

Despite serving a high-poverty population, Tom C Gooch adds significant academic value compared to similarly challenged neighbors. It outperforms Nathan Adams Elementary and Chapel Hill Preparatory-A Personalized Lrning School, which rank in the 27th and 28th percentiles, respectively. The school invests heavily in its students, with per-student spending of $15,116 and a low student-teacher ratio of 13.7 to 1—the highest spending and one of the lowest ratios among its peers. Its bilingual program is a notable strength, with Spanish-language reading scores in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades often exceeding English reading scores, suggesting effective native-language literacy development.

While the school has shown a strong upward trend, climbing from the 31st to the 52nd percentile in state rankings over three years, it still lags behind higher-performing neighbors like Everette Lee Degolyer Elementary (79th percentile) and Harry C Withers (89th percentile), which serve less impoverished populations. Math remains a systemic challenge, with 4th and 6th-grade math proficiency roughly half the state average. Additionally, the school struggles to serve its Gifted and Talented students, who have ranked in the bottom 16th percentile or lower for three years. Performance for Special Education students is highly volatile, swinging from the 99th percentile in 2024-2025 to the 39th percentile in 2025-2026, indicating cohort-dependent success.

Open Quote My daughter is in kindergarten at Gooch. She is part of the new Two Way Dual Language Program, and really enjoys going to school there. We love living so close to the school and being able to walk her there every day. The school is a hidden gem of a place, with caring and friendly teachers, and a really nice atmosphere. Close Quote

Open Quote Not very safe !!! I walked the halls frequently and I would not be asked where I am going or what I am doing. School needs more supervision and security all kids & staff should require to wear a badge. Needs more security outside in the mornings on the main entrance. Some kids get drop off to school early in the morning and no one is out there to supervised. Close Quote
