Summary

Copeland Elementary in Houston, TX, is a mid-to-high performing school serving 951 students in grades PK through 5 within the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District (ISD), and it has consistently earned a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger for the past decade, placing it in the top 25% of Texas elementary schools.

Copeland’s standout strength is its exceptional performance in Mathematics, where it significantly outperforms both district and state averages across all grade levels—for example, 71.23% of 4th graders were proficient, compared to 56.41% district-wide and 49.28% statewide. This makes it a math powerhouse in the area, with its 4th-grade math score being the second-highest among nearby schools, trailing only the elite Byrd Elementary (a 5-star school with a 95th percentile ranking). However, Copeland shows a "tale of two schools" in subgroup performance: while it excels with White and Hispanic students (ranking in the 91st and 88th percentiles statewide, respectively), it struggles with Asian students, who dropped from the 85th to the 37th percentile in just two years, and English Language Learners, who rank in the 49th percentile. This volatility warrants attention, though the school has shown remarkable improvement for Multi-racial students, jumping from the 37th to the 88th percentile over the same period.

Copeland’s spending per student ($9,351) is in the middle of the pack compared to neighbors like Holmsley Elementary ($11,406) and Hoover Elementary ($11,318), and its student-teacher ratio of 16:1 is slightly higher than the nearby average, suggesting a leaner operational model that still yields strong results. While Copeland’s state ranking has slipped slightly from a peak of the 86th percentile to the 82nd percentile, it remains a solid choice for families, especially those prioritizing math education. For parents comparing options, nearby Birkes Elementary (86th percentile) and Byrd Elementary (95th percentile) are trending upward, offering a contrast in performance and socioeconomic factors.

Open Quote Loved having lunch with my child and there were rules in place. Students knew the expectations. They are not just allowed to run around at will. I do not have a problem with the last 5 minutes of my child's lunch being silent lunch. This allows those children who spend most of their lunch talking, to finish eating. The security has tightened up this year. Even with ever changing budget requirements, I don't feel like these changes have lessened my child's education. Way to go Copeland Colts! Keep up the respectful and managed routines! Close Quote
