Summary

Howard Elementary School in Gallatin, TN, serves 591 students in grades PK-5 and is part of Sumner County Schools, a 4-star district. Howard has earned 4 stars itself, ranking 249th out of 1,019 Tennessee elementary schools (76th percentile) in the latest reporting year—a steady climb from 3 stars and the 55th percentile just five years ago.

Howard's biggest academic strength is math. In the most recent school year, 64% of students scored proficient in math, far above the state average of 43%. Third and fourth graders shine especially bright, with 68.6% and 68.1% proficiency, respectively, both outpacing the district average. Attendance is another plus: Howard's chronic absenteeism rate is just 8.8%, well below the district's 12.2% and the state's 18.3%. The school also posts strong results for Hispanic, low-income, and English Learner students, ranking in the top quartile statewide for those groups.

Reading and science are the areas to watch. ELA proficiency sits at 48.2%, above the state (40.6%) but below the district (51.1%), and the gap widens in 5th grade. Science has slipped from 61.1% to 52.9% over three years. Compared to nearby schools, Howard holds its own in math against top performers like Liberty Creek Elementary School (64% vs. 82.3%) and Union Elementary School (64% vs. 78.7%), but trails them significantly in ELA and science. At the same time, Howard clearly outpaces lower-performing neighbors like Guild Elementary School, Benny C. Bills Elementary School, and Vena Stuart Elementary School in every subject. With per-pupil spending higher than several top-performing nearby schools, Howard has the resources to close its literacy gap and reach the next tier.

Open Quote My son is in Kindergarten and this school is the worst I have ever seen, protocol for ADHD is getting tested for a IEP, not my son he got a 504 with nothing on it. He is isolated in class and had no friends, he has to sit with a disabled child who can't even talk. They never let him have lunch with the other children, the Principal, nurse, and guidance counselor are the most rude school staff I ever met. My son is already behind, he doesn't know how to write his letters still. This mother is not happy, may not let him return after winter break. Close Quote
