Summary

Barkers Mill Elementary School is a PK-5 school in Clarksville, TN, serving 965 students as part of Clarksville-Montgomery County Schools. The school ranks 356th out of 1,019 Tennessee elementary schools — the 65th percentile — earning 3 stars, which makes it the highest-ranked elementary school among 10 nearby same-district schools in its comparison group. Barkers Mill outperforms both its district and the state across all three tested subjects: 45.7% proficiency in math (vs. 42.1% district and 43.0% state), 46.6% in English Language Arts (vs. 42.3% and 40.6%), and 56.6% in science (vs. 53.5% and 46.9%).

The school shows clear upward momentum. Its state percentile has climbed from 45th in 2023-24 to 53rd in 2024-25 and 65th in 2025-26, with particularly strong gains in science (+14.1 points). Barkers Mill also stands out for how well it serves specific student groups: Hispanic students rank at the 90th percentile statewide (5 stars), and low-income students at the 75th percentile. Chronic absenteeism has dropped steadily to 13.4%, below the district (15.1%) and state (18.3%) rates, and is lower than most nearby schools. Among its closest rivals, West Creek Elementary School posts slightly higher ELA scores, but Barkers Mill leads in math and science. Hazelwood Elementary School and Pisgah Elementary School trail in overall state ranking.

Two areas deserve attention. Fifth-grade scores lag behind both the district and state averages, especially in math (39.1% vs. 50.3% district), while 4th grade is a standout. Military-connected students are also a clear equity gap, ranking at the 17th percentile statewide. On the positive side, special education students have improved dramatically, from the 22nd to the 51st percentile over two years. Notably, Barkers Mill spends $13,016 per student — near the middle of its cluster — yet outperforms schools that spend more, such as Byrns Darden Elementary School. With its strong trajectory and clear areas to target, Barkers Mill is well positioned to keep climbing.

Open Quote Barkers Mill has a bullying problem to include student harassment. This matter is completely ignored by the administration. The counselors have a no stance attitude towards this and frankly don't take this issue seriously. Close Quote
