Douglass High School is a public high school in Memphis, TN, serving 604 students in grades 9–12 as part of Memphis-Shelby County Schools. The most striking thing about Douglass is its recent academic turnaround. In 2023–24, the school ranked in the bottom 5% of Tennessee high schools. Just two years later, it jumped to the 46th percentile statewide — nearly the median. Proficiency rates more than doubled in several subjects: Algebra I went from 5.1% to 33.3% proficient, Biology I from 9% to 41.5%, and English II from 16.4% to 41%. In those subjects, Douglass now beats the district average, and it outperforms nearby schools like Kingsbury High School, Trezevant High School, KIPP Memphis Collegiate High School, and Memphis Business Academy High School by a wide margin.
