Summary
East High School is a public high school in Memphis, TN, serving 583 students in grades 9–12 as part of Memphis-Shelby County Schools. Despite its district ranking near the bottom statewide, East High School has become one of Tennessee’s top high schools, ranking 43rd out of 400 schools statewide (89th percentile, 4 stars) for 2025–2026. This is a dramatic turnaround from a decade ago, when the school ranked in the bottom 10% of the state. It now outperforms every nearby high school in its immediate peer group, including White Station High School, which ranks 96th statewide, and Crosstown High School, which ranks 150th.
Academically, East High School posts exceptionally strong test scores. Proficiency rates in English II (87.8%), Biology I (74.8%), and US History (64.8%) are more than double the district average and well above state averages. The school also has a 98.3% graduation rate and a dropout rate of just 1.7%, compared to the district’s 14.4% dropout rate. Chronic absenteeism sits at 14.2%, far below the district rate of 30.2% and much lower than nearby schools like Kingsbury High School (52.5%) or Melrose High School (69.9%). The one area where East trails the state is Algebra I, with 26.4% proficiency versus 32.3% statewide, even though students go on to exceed state averages in Geometry and Algebra II.
What truly sets East apart is its consistent success with student groups that are often underserved statewide. East ranks 5th in Tennessee for African American students and 8th for low-income students, both in the 97th–98th percentile with 5-star ratings. Hispanic students also rank in the top 15 statewide. This strong performance is not explained by higher spending—East spends about $14,791 per student, similar to or less than several nearby schools that perform far worse. For parents, East High School represents a rare combination: a mid-sized, neighborhood high school that delivers both academic excellence and equity, all within a district where most high schools struggle to reach even the state average.
